About Me


I am a member of the Lay Real Estate Group with my daughter, Cali Lay, and son-in-law Jeremiah, a family team with over 40 years of combined real estate experience. In addition, our brokerage of Better Homes and Gardens/TCN Commercial - Steinborn & Associates is the leading real estate brokerage in Southern New Mexico with superior management, support, and over 100 seasoned real estate professionals strong.

Plus, my detailed oriented skill set from managing a multi-million-dollar company's marketing, sales, and production for several years shine through. My Professional Background


I grew up in the real estate business in Gunnison, Colorado managing a small Century 21 crew and over 125 rental properties and, of course, selling anything I could get my hands on, from condos and homes to mining claims and ranches. After finishing up a Business Marketing degree at Western Colorado University, my wife and I spent a short stint in California before moving back to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In 1992, a local group hired me as President of Schaefer Outfitter, a defunct western wear brand needing a turnaround and rebranding. In 2000, we purchased the company and continued to either run or own the company to a several million-dollar concern from Steamboat to Las Cruces and Fort Worth, Texas. Those were exciting times, with many of my outerwear designs featured in the hit TV series Yellowstone all while maintaining a strong presence in national rodeo events, major retailers, and catalogers worldwide. All the while, I have been successfully purchasing, selling, and developing real estate in the communities we've lived. We are lucky to call Las Cruces home and to come full circle back to the real estate business serving the Las Cruces community for years to come.

When I'm not busy getting things done at work, you'll find me hiking, fishing, golfing, jeeping, or enjoying everything Las Cruces and the surrounding area have to offer with my family.
